American (Social Identity)

One of the two social identities of consequence in American electoral politics. The opposing social identity is most conveniently labelled Democrat (Social Identity) .

Americans identify strongly with most or all of the following values:

  • National pride
  • Primacy of the individual as the only entity which can have moral agency
  • Individual liberty, including the right to go armed
  • Reverence for the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America
  • Understanding of American institutions as being fundamental to civilization: equality before the law, jury trials, checks and balances between the branches of government, limited/enumerated powers, inalienable rights, etc.
  • A can-do attitude
  • Love of the American Flag and the National Anthem
  • Fighting spirit
  • Neighborliness and trust; the sense that we are all one national family
  • Promotion for merit; reward for hard work, creativity, or successful risk-taking
  • Leadership in technology
  • Lawfulness in government
  • War on principle; Victory in war
