"Educate" literally means "to lead out". For something to be education, it should increase the student's capability for experience and behavior.
Much of schooling is the opposite of education. Instead of leading out, it locks in, or leads away.
The best kind of education is self-education, e.g. independent study, travel, work experience. Provided that self-education is feasible for a given educational goal, self-education is invariably preferable to schooling.
